Adventure has always had a particular fascination for me, even though I read novels of this genre very late. Yet the great titles of children's stories were known to me and intrigued me a lot, like the works of Verne, Salgari, Stevenson, books that were around in my house. I read adventure novels to be able to have experiences that I can't have, but also to get inspiration for trips that I'll plan to take one day. And also because I know that they are books that cannot bore. I may not like it, as happened to me with a Wilbur Smith novel, but it certainly isn't boring. What is adventure How to define the adventure novel? In my opinion it is one of those narrative genres, like fantasy, which contains multiple genres. There is mystery, mystery, thriller, even horror at times, there is history, drama.
Many genres mixed together to produce a hybrid. What I look for in adventure stories, what I expect to read, is: suspense : the reader must quickly find himself in a state of expectation, he must be intrigued by the events, he Phone Number Datamust worry about the fate of the characters; twists and turns : in an adventure novel something must happen, there is no room for stasis, for freeze-frames, each chapter must have an urge to proceed, to continue reading; drama : there is no adventure without drama and drama does not mean that the book ends due to lack of interpreters, but that the characters also have to deal with bad luck; travels : the adventure always involves a journey, even if short, it involves one or more characters going from one place to another; action : the adventure is dynamic and requires dynamic characters, there is no place for couch potatoes, but for people ready to move and take risks; mystery.
There is always a mystery to solve in an adventure novel, an event or object that triggers the characters' curiosity and pushes them to action; changes : at the end of the story the characters have changed, because any adventure, especially one that can be told in a book, is an experience that makes you grow and therefore changes you. There are many authors of adventure novels to read and that I have read. From Stevenson to Kipling, from Salgari to Verne, from London to Twain to Burroughs. Many styles and many stories, each different from the other. The ones I mentioned are classic authors, but there are certainly modern authors who are worth reading. I didn't like Wilbur Smith or any of Crichton's novels. However, I would like to read something else about the latter. However, I liked White Hunter Black Heart by Peter Viertel. I would like to read more modern authors, but all the adventure novels I have, except 2-3, are by classic authors. The question I ask myself is: is it worth reading adventure novels written by modern authors? How original and compelling can I be? Hasn't everything been written about the adventure already.
